How do both systems work?

What does LTE mean?

The full name of LTE is Long Term Evolution. It is a mobile broadband communications standard, commonly referred to as 4G LTE. In simple words, LTE is the technology that provides fast mobile internet service to your smartphone.

When the LTE signal appears on your phone, it means you are connected to a 4G network. It provides faster internet speeds than the older 3G and 2G networks. With this, you can easily perform tasks like video streaming, fast file downloading, online gaming and browsing without any interruption.

However, LTE was created primarily for faster internet. Previously, when you were using LTE, your voice calls were still made through 2G or 3G networks. This meant that the internet speed was fast, but the old network was used for calls.

What does VoLTE mean?

VoLTE means Voice over Long Term Evolution. As the name implies, this technology allows you to make voice calls directly over LTE (4G) networks, without resorting to legacy networks.

If VoLTE is shown on your phone, it means that both your device and network support HD (high-definition) voice calls. VoLTE calls sound crystal clear, the connection is established quickly, and most importantly, you can also use the internet during the call.

features

  • LTE: Fast internet speed, live streaming, and uninterrupted browsing.
  • VoLTE: HD voice calls, fast connections, and internet access during calls.

Performance and Benchmarks

The performance of both technologies improves Internet and voice call quality. VoLTE gives users better call experience and data transfer capabilities.

Availability and price

LTE and VoLTE technologies are available in most modern smartphones. Various companies in the market support these technologies, giving the consumer freedom of choice.

Compare

  • LTE: Data services only, using legacy network for calls.
  • VoLTE: Modern networks for both data and voice services.
