Desk: Former Railway Minister and TMC leader Mukul Roy died at 1:30 am at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata. His son Subhranshu Roy has confirmed this. It is being told that he died due to cardiac arrest. Shubhranshu Roy says that his father was facing many health related problems. Recently his health had worsened. After this he was admitted to the hospital, where he died during treatment late on Sunday night.

Mukul Roy started his political career with Youth Congress in Bengal. After this, Roy, one of the founding members of Trinamool Congress, remained a close aide of Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee for a long time. Mamata initially made Mukul the general secretary of the party. After this he emerged as a big face of TMC in Delhi. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2006 and was the party leader in the Upper House from 2009 to 2012. However, Roy left TMC and joined Bharatiya Janata Party in November 2017.

It is said that Mukul Roy played an important role in strengthening Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. In the year 2021, he had contested from Krishnanagar North seat on BJP ticket and won the assembly elections.

Meanwhile, Mukul Roy said goodbye to BJP in June 2021 and returned to TMC. On November 13, 2025, the Calcutta High Court had declared Roy a disqualified MLA under the anti-defection law. It is said that Mukul was not seen in any party meeting for the last two years.
