A Chinese influencer accidentally revealed her real face when a beauty filter failed during a livestream, sparking debate over online authenticity and reportedly costing her 140,000 followers.
Footage of the incident circulated online in late February, the New York Post reported. The influencer was hosting a makeup tutorial when the filter she was using abruptly switched off, revealing her natural skin tone and signs of aging.
Although claims that she lost thousands of followers quickly spread, those figures have not been independently verified.
Despite the backlash, many viewers came to her defense, saying they preferred her unedited look. Some commenters described the filtered version as artificial and less vibrant, while others criticized the heavy reliance on digital enhancement tools.
Her identity has not been disclosed, according to The Sun. Many viewers defended her and said they preferred her unfiltered look.
“I think she’s so much more prettier than the filter. The filter looks lifeless,” one commenter wrote.
Others criticized the overuse of digital enhancement tools. “She’s literally so beautiful I can’t, I’m so mad for her,” another comment said.
Her incident renewed debate over the use of beauty filters among content creators. In 2019, Chinese social media was stirred when online personality Qiao Biluo was revealed to be a middle-aged woman, as opposed to the youthful persona she had portrayed.
The New York Post said advanced beauty filters such as Bold Glamour on TikTok have made digital enhancement more accessible but have also raised concerns. Many users say they feel insecure about their real appearance after using AI-powered filters.
“I was happy with the way I looked until I tried the beauty filters,” a British influencer said.
