Sunil Gavaskar gave special advice to Abhishek Sharma
New Delhi, 20 February 2026: Abhishek Sharma has played three innings in the 2026 T20 World Cup, but has not opened his account yet. He was out for zero runs in all three matches. Abhishek’s bad form is a cause of concern for Team India. Now, legendary former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has given guidance to Abhishek on how to hit the flop.
Gavaskar had initially said that expectations were becoming a burden for Abhishek. He further suggested that Abhishek should initially concentrate on building his innings instead of playing big shots. Abhishek has so far played three matches against USA, Pakistan and Netherlands. He was out at 0, 0 and 0 in all three matches.
expectations are becoming a burden
Speaking on Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar said, “Abhishek is good, but expectations are becoming a burden for him. If he had got a good start against USA, the situation would have been different. Now the pressure of becoming a six-hitting top-order batsman is beginning to show.”
fast batting is not good
The great Gavaskar further said, “He needs to spend time at the crease. He cannot even think of hitting the boundary on the first ball of the innings. If the big shot comes then it is fine. But he should not play shots across the line. Take a single ball and open your account. Don’t bowl even four dot balls. He can make up for it later. He needs to play smart in the beginning. Play one or two to settle down and then play his natural game.”
Gavaskar further said, “Open your account first. Everyone wants that first run. Once he gets that, then everything falls into place.”
