Violence erupts in Mexico after drug mafia encounter, Indian Embassy issues advisory

New Delhi, 23 February. India has issued an advisory to its citizens living in Mexico to remain vigilant about security and stay away from “areas in the vicinity of lawful activities”. The advisory comes in the wake of violence that broke out after a notorious drug lord was killed in an encounter with Mexican police. The slain drug lord has been identified as Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes alias ‘El Mencho’, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. He was injured in an encounter with soldiers. He died on the way to Mexico City. After this, violent incidents came to light in many areas.

The advisory issued by the Indian Embassy states that Indian citizens should stay away from places where law enforcement agencies are carrying out their work. Be aware of your surroundings, take shelter in a safe place and avoid unnecessary going out. “There are currently ongoing security operations and associated road blockades and criminal activities. Indian nationals residing in Jalisco State (Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara Region), Tamaulipas State (Reynosa and other municipalities), Michoacán State, Guerrero State and Nuevo León State should remain in their respective locations until further orders,” the advisory said.

The advisory told people to stay informed from local media, follow instructions from local officials and call 911 in an emergency. According to official data, the estimated number of Indian community in Mexico by the end of 2023 is between 8,000 to 10,650. The 2020 census identified 1,825 legal Indian immigrants, although the total number fluctuates due to increases in tourism, trade and transit migration.
