Why the Hyryder is Smashing Records While Others Struggle:
For years, when you thought of Toyota in India, the Innova was the undisputed champion. But the latest sales data from January 2026 tells a very different story. There’s a new favorite in town, and it’s the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
The New Number One The Hyryder didn’t just win; it dominated. In January 2026, the SUV found 9,156 new homesmarking a massive 85.31% jump compared to the same month last year. Just 12 months ago, that number was sitting at 4,941. This surge has officially knocked the Innova Hycross off the top spot, which it held just a month earlier in December 2025.
The Innova Siblings: A Mixed Bag While the Innova Hycross had a decent month, selling 6,391 units (a growth of about 13%), its older sibling, the Innova Crystadidn’t fare as well. The Crysta saw a significant drop of over 26%, with only 364 units sold. It seems the market is leaning heavily toward the modern, hybrid tech of the Hycross.
What About the Big Guns? The legendary Toyota Fortuner remains a steady player, but even it saw a small dip. With 3,046 units sold, its sales were down by about 3.27% compared to last January. Meanwhile, the Toyota Glanza (2,978 units) and the Rumion (2,829 units) took the fifth and sixth spots respectively. Interestingly, the Rumion is gaining some serious traction, showing a 45% growth year-on-year.
The Luxury & Niche Segment Even at the higher end, there were some interesting numbers. The Toyota Vellfire the luxury MPV saw an incredible percentage jump (though on a smaller base), selling 123 units. The Hilux also had a great month with 317 units sold, a 32% increase. At the very end of the list was the Land Cruiser 300with 21 units making their way to elite garages.
Why the Shift? It’s clear that the Indian buyer’s appetite for mid-size SUVs is stronger than ever. The Hyryder’s combination of hybrid efficiency and SUV styling is hitting the sweet spot. While the Innova remains an icon for families and fleets, the Hyryder is proof that Toyota’s gamble on the SUV segment is paying off in a big way.
