IND vs SA, T20 World Cup: ‘Leave overconfidence, play according to the situation’, Sunil Gavaskar furious over India’s defeat

Sunil Gavaskar reacts after India’s loss vs SA, says India not getting good starts

India faced a crushing defeat by 76 runs in the important Super Eight match against South Africa due to the failure of the batsmen.

IND vs SA, T20 World Cup: Sunil Gavaskar, the great batsman of his time, believes that India should give up its ego by learning from the T20 World Cup match played against South Africa. He said that the team should play according to the conditions rather than being overconfident and not trying to send every ball out of the boundary. Due to the failure of the batsmen in this match, India had to face a crushing defeat by 76 runs in the important match of Super Eight.

Gavaskar told Geo Star, “The Indian batsmen should have learned from the partnership of Brewis and Miller and adopted the same approach. But they did not do so. They came on the field with more confidence, attacked every ball and lost wickets. South Africa proved to be better than India in every department.”

South Africa did not have a good start and at one point their score was only 20 runs for three wickets. However, after this, Miller and Brewis took over the team by making an important partnership of 97 runs, due to which South Africa could reach 187 runs for seven wickets. In reply, the Indian team was reduced to 111 runs in 18.5 overs.

Sunil Gavaskar said, “India did not learn any lessons from South Africa. Indian batsmen were trying to take every ball across the boundary as soon as they came to the crease, whereas T20 cricket is not played like this.”

He further said, “You should have learned from the opposition team. When they scored a good score on a difficult pitch, the Indian batsmen should have left their ego and analyzed their innings and batted as per the conditions.”

India lost the wickets of its top three batsmen — Ishan Kishan (0), Abhishek Sharma (15) and Tilak Verma (1) — inside the powerplay. Sunil Gavaskar said, “Tilak Verma is a very intelligent batsman, but I was disappointed with the way he played in this match. He should have spent time at the crease and focused on building partnerships.”

India’s next match is against Zimbabwe. Gavaskar said that he would like to see Axar Patel in the playing eleven. Against South Africa, India had given a chance to Washington Sundar in place of Akshar Patel.

Gavaskar said, “There are less left-handed batsmen in the Zimbabwe team, so I would like Axar Patel to return to the playing eleven. You can include him in place of Arshdeep Singh. Although Arshdeep bowled well against South Africa, Washington Sundar may have to sit out.”
