23rd February was an unforgettable day for Indian cinema. Manipuri film ‘Boong’ created history by winning the Best Children and Family Film award at BAFTA Awards 2026. This is India’s first winning film in this category.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter, “Congratulations to everyone associated with the film. This is a very happy moment for Manipur. It reflects the creative talent of our country.”
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, “Manipuri film ‘Boong’ did wonders at BAFTA 2026. Amidst the challenges, it became the first Indian production to become the Best Children and Family Film. Hearty congratulations to the entire team, you have brought glory to the country.”
‘Boong’, directed by Lakshmipriya Devi on Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment banner, was the first Indian BAFTA nominated film of the year and became the winner. At the ceremony, Lakshmipriya emotionally reached the stage to receive the award, Farhan was with her. He thanked BAFTA and saluted the power of Indian cinema.
The story of the film revolves around a schoolboy who settles on the border of Manipur. Faced with violence, racial tension and neglect since birth, he tries to unite his estranged family and recover his missing father. The unique confluence of comedy-drama in the background of socio-political instability is emotional.
