Delhi Police busts international drug gang, 5 arrested, pills worth Rs 9 crore recovered

New Delhi. Delhi Police has busted an international drug smuggling ring allegedly linked to Britain and seized over 18 lakh psychotropic pills worth Rs 9 crore. An official gave this information on Monday.

Delhi Police said in a statement that five people have been arrested in this case and the investigation has revealed an organized drug smuggling gang which used to send banned medicines abroad through logistics companies, courier services and export consignments.

Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vikram Singh said in a statement that the case dates back to October 7 last year, when a Crime Branch team, based on specific information, laid a trap in Sarita Vihar and arrested Mohammad Abid (50) and recovered 54,000 tablets of Tramadol Hydrochloride weighing 14.472 kg from him.

He said that after registering an FIR, further investigation was started and during the interrogation, the police came to know about the supply chain of the gang. Abid told that he used to take these pills from his relative’s son-in-law Javed Khan.

“Khan was arrested on October 30. During interrogation, he named Sunil Kumar, owner of Samalka-based Prahlad Logistics. Sunil Kumar was arrested on November 2 last year and he named Vishnu Dutt Sharma as the supplier,” the official said.

Vishnu Dutt Sharma, who worked as an exporter, was also arrested on November 2 and revealed his links with Vikas Singh alias Ishwar Singh and TC Sedana. Vikas Singh was arrested on November 6.

Police said the process of declaring another associate, Naushad alias Bablu, as a fugitive is underway. Police also revealed that Sharma had sent a container to Britain in the guise of household goods, in which 32 boxes of Tramadol and other banned pills were hidden. As soon as this information was received, the Crime Branch coordinated with the Customs officials and ensured that the consignment was seized. This consignment did not reach Britain and was sent back to India.

Vikram Singh said that the container reached T-3 terminal of Mundra port in Gujarat and on February 16, a joint raid was conducted on the warehouse of Mundra port in the presence of police, drug inspector, FSL team and Customs SIT.

He said that during the raid, a huge consignment of psychotropic substances was recovered and the same was confiscated following due legal procedure. According to the statement, a total of 18,47,400 tablets of Alprazolam, Tramadol, Zolpidem and Nitrazepam were recovered with a total weight of 528.402 kg.
