Horrific bus accident in Nepal: Bus falls into Trishuli river, 18 killed; Many passengers including foreign tourists injured
Kathmandu. A horrific road accident created an uproar in Nepal’s Dhading district in the early hours of Monday. A passenger bus going from Pokhara to Kathmandu lost control on the Prithvi Highway and fell into the Trishuli river. At least 18 people died in this tragic accident, while more than 25 passengers are said to be injured. The incident occurred near Chinadhara area at around 1 am Indian time.
There were more than 40 passengers in the bus-
According to local media reports, there were 40 to 45 passengers on board the bus, including some foreign tourists. Six women and 11 men are said to be among the dead. The injured include eight women, 18 men and a minor girl. All the injured have been admitted to various nearby hospitals.
The bus fell 300 meters down.
It is being told that the accident happened near Bhaisepati area of Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality-5. The bus suddenly lost control and slid off the road and fell down a slope of about 300 meters towards the river bank. The bus was found in a badly damaged condition after the accident.
Investigation into the cause of the accident continues-
According to the police, the reasons for the accident are being investigated. Initial suspicions were that the driver lost control or the road conditions were poor. The presence of more passengers in the bus than its carrying capacity is also being investigated. The administration has informed the families of the deceased.
Relief work at night became a challenge-
Due to the accident happening late at night, there were huge difficulties in the rescue operation. Nepali Army, Armed Police Forces, Nepal Police and local people jointly carried out relief operations. Darkness and the strong current of Trishuli river remained a big challenge for the rescue team. Highway Rescue Management Committee Chairman Rajkumar Thakuri said that arrangements were made to immediately take the injured to the hospital.
This tragic accident has plunged the entire area into mourning, while the administration has ordered a detailed investigation into the accident.
