T20 World Cup 2026: West Indies made two historic records
Delhi: In the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, West Indies created a new history by creating a batting storm. In its first match of the Super-8 stage, the Caribbean team made the record of the second highest score of the tournament by scoring 254 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs against Zimbabwe. With this explosive performance, West Indies left behind not one but two big records of England.
Big start in Super-8
West Indies, who came to bat first after losing the toss, had an ordinary start. Brendon King was out cheaply, while captain Shai Hope also could not play a long innings. After the initial setbacks, the team looked to be under pressure, but the middle order completely changed the picture of the match.
Explosive partnership of Hetmyer and Powell
Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell aggressively attacked Zimbabwe’s bowlers and increased the pace of runs. Hetmyer completed his half-century in just 19 balls and played a quick inning of 85 runs in 34 balls, which included 7 fours and 7 sixes. He also made a unique record of scoring runs at the fastest strike rate after playing more than 30 balls. On the other hand, captain Powell also batted brilliantly and scored 59 runs in 35 balls and played an important role in taking the team to a huge score.
Rain of runs in the last overs
In the last phase of the innings, Sherfane Rutherford and Jason Holder scored runs rapidly and took the score beyond 250. Rutherford scored 31 runs in 13 balls, while Holder further strengthened the team’s lead by adding 13 runs in just 4 balls.
England’s records broken, India’s equal
The 254 runs scored in this match became one of the biggest scores in T20 World Cup history. West Indies overtook England’s score of 230 runs, which was the third highest score of the first tournament. Also, West Indies has now become the team to score 200 or more runs four times in the T20 World Cup, leaving England behind and equaling India. Now South Africa leads the list, having scored more than 200 six times, while Sri Lanka and England have achieved this feat three times each.
Sri Lanka’s record narrowly missed
If the West Indies team had scored seven more runs, it could have broken the record of 260 runs made by Sri Lanka against Kenya in 2007. However, the team missed this historic achievement by a narrow margin.
Zimbabwe’s bowling was ineffective
Zimbabwe’s bowlers looked helpless in front of the Caribbean batsmen. Richard Ngarwa took 2 wickets for 47 runs in 4 overs, while Blessing Muzarabani also got two successes. Captain Sikandar Raza had a very bad day and he gave away 52 runs in 3 overs, due to which the team came under pressure.
