Increase in air fares during festival season, Supreme Court expressed concern, know what it said…
New Delhi. The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the increase in air fares during the festival season and holidays. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta on Monday heard a petition seeking regulatory guidelines to control rising airfares.
The Federation of India Airlines (FIA) sought to join the case, but the court declined for now, saying it could be considered later. According to the petition filed before the court, air travel is no longer a luxury but an essential service for millions of people.
In this, a demand has been made to direct the Central Government and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to make necessary rules to fix the price of air fares, control the price rise, regulate baggage and additional charges.
Additional Solicitor General Anil Kaushik, appearing for the government, said that the government is considering the issue as a priority and its reply will be filed within four weeks. After this the court postponed the hearing of the case till March 23.
