Delhi: New records are being seen every day in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, but what happened at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday added a new chapter in the history of the tournament. West Indies and Zimbabwe were face to face in the important match of Super 8, and this match made a world record with the rain of sixes.
New history made in Wankhede
In this match played at the prestigious Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, after winning the toss, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza decided to bowl first, which proved costly for his team. West Indies batted aggressively and scored a huge score of 254 runs in 20 overs, which became the highest score of this World Cup so far.
Old record broken due to rain of sixes
A total of 19 sixes were hit in West Indies’ innings, due to which they equaled the old record of Netherlands for most sixes in an innings in the T20 World Cup. In reply, even though Zimbabwe team could not achieve the target, the batsmen made the match memorable by hitting 12 sixes. In this way, a total of 31 sixes were hit in the entire match, which is a new world record for most sixes in a match in T20 World Cup history. Earlier in 2014, 30 sixes were hit in the Ireland vs Netherlands match.
Great victory and dominance of West Indies
Chasing the target, Zimbabwe team was all out for 147 runs in 17.4 overs and had to face a crushing defeat by 107 runs. With this victory, West Indies registered its fifth consecutive win in the tournament.
Wankhede became a lucky ground for West Indies
Interestingly, West Indies has won all its five matches played so far at Wankhede Stadium in the T20 World Cup. The team’s unbeaten record continues on this ground, due to which this venue is being considered no less than a ‘lucky charm’ for them.
