Why was the decision to attack this taken?
This attack has taken place at a time when Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is under increasing pressure from US President Donald Trump to crack down on drug trafficking. The action also comes at a time when Guadalajara, the Mexican city where violence broke out following the arrest of the drug kingpin, is scheduled to host four group-stage matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
How was this operation carried out?
1. After several years of searching, on February 20, security agencies received concrete information about Oseguera’s whereabouts.
2. During the investigation, the agencies reached a person associated with his network, who could help in reaching his hiding place.
3. According to Defense Secretary Ricardo Treviño Trejo, this man was the close friend of one of Oseguera’s girlfriends.
4. The next day his girlfriend left the cabin campus on the outskirts of Tapalpa, but Oseguera remained there with his security personnel. This is where the timer for his death started
5. After this, the Mexican Air Force and the Special Immediate Reaction Force of the National Guard jointly planned the raid.
6. The operation was launched within 24 hours and to avoid suspicion mainly ground forces were used, with limited air support from helicopters.
7. On Sunday morning, several army units were deployed in the central area of Tapalpa and the campus was surrounded from all sides.
8. As the soldiers advanced, Oseguera’s associates started firing, in response to which the security forces took action. In this encounter, eight members of the cartel were killed and two soldiers were injured.
9. Oseguera and some of his associates fled into the nearby forest, while some of his men continued fighting in the cabin complex.
10. A team of Special Forces split up and chased Oseguera into the jungle and found him hiding in the bushes.
11. Following the ensuing gunfight, Oseguera and two of his bodyguards were captured and airlifted to Guadalajara by helicopter along with a wounded soldier.
12. All three cartel members died during the flight. Due to fear of possible violence, the helicopter’s route was changed to Morelia International Airport and preparations were made to take them to Mexico City from there. After this, as soon as the news of his death spread, violence and chaos spread in many areas.
