A story of swords, attacks and faith! The temple survived despite the best efforts of the Mughals, ancient history will be seen on the big screen

Jai Somnath: In a major announcement, filmmakers Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ketan Mehta have joined hands to bring a huge historical chapter of India to the big screen. Titled ‘Jai Somnath’, the historical drama will relive the events of 1025–1026 CE, when Mahmud Ghaznavi attacked and looted the holy Somnath temple. There are only a few places in India that show history, faith and strength as much as the Somnath Temple. More than just a place of worship, it has been a symbol of hope and strength, enduring centuries of attack and reconstruction. Now, this story of tremendous courage is going to come alive on the big screen with Jai Somnath, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ketan Mehta.

Mughals targeted the temple several times

The film focuses on one of the most dramatic events in the history of the temple, as historical stories tell of the temple being looted, its sacred Jyotirlinga desecrated, and the treasures taken away, leaving a mark on the cultural memory of the area. Yet, the Somnath temple did not remain a story of defeat; It has been rebuilt again and again by those who have not allowed its legacy to be erased. The attacks did not stop with Mahmud of Ghazni. In 1299 CE, Ulugh Khan, a general of Alauddin Khilji, launched the next attack, followed by Zafar Khan in 1395 CE and Mahmud Begada in 1451 CE. The place of Somnath has been a special pilgrimage site since ancient times. It is situated at the sacred Triveni Sangam, which is the confluence of Kapila, Hiran and Saraswati rivers. Historical records show that the Gurjara-Pratihara king Nagabhata II visited shrines in Saurashtra, including Someshwara, which is another name for the temple.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali will make you face the truth

Even during the reign of Aurangzeb, the temple was demolished around 1665 CE. Each time, it was painstakingly rebuilt, a testament to the devotion and determination of generations. Jai Somnath is not just a story of battles and attacks; It also tries to show the human stories behind them. The film promises to showcase the devotion, sacrifice and courage of those who kept the spirit of the temple alive despite centuries of hardships. With Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s brilliant, emotional storytelling and Ketan Mehta’s expertise in historical stories, the film aims to give audiences both spectacular spectacle and heart. By shining a light on this special chapter of Indian history, Jai Somnath will not only celebrate the temple, but also the faith, culture and enduring spirit of strength within it — a story of the triumph of creation over destruction and generations of people refusing to let their legacy be destroyed.
