Girlfriend’s whistleblower and gruesome encounter… this is how Mexican drug lord El Mencho ended.

Mexico’s most dangerous and wanted drug kingpin has finally been killed. Nemesio Oseguera, known to the world as ‘El Mencho’ and carrying a $15 million bounty, was killed in a massive military operation following an intelligence tip. The surprising thing was that important information received from one of his girlfriend played an important role in finding him.

Nemesio Oseguera was the head of Mexico’s notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). This gang is counted among the most powerful criminal organizations in the country and has been a major rival of the Sinaloa Cartel. America had announced a reward of 15 million dollars for anyone who helps in his arrest. He was facing serious charges of smuggling cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl into America. Washington had classified his gang as a terrorist organization.

Important information received from girlfriend

According to Mexican Defense Minister Ricardo Trevila, a person close to one of Oseguera’s girlfriend informed authorities of his presence. It was told that he was hiding in a house in Tapalpa, a beautiful village in western Mexico. The area is known for holiday homes and is generally considered quiet. As soon as the information was received, the National Guard’s Special Immediate Reaction Force planned rapid action. Preparations were made to carry out the operation in complete secrecy so that the kingpin would not get a clue.

Fierce encounter and attack on helicopter

When special forces arrived to arrest him on Sunday, the situation became extremely violent. Oseguera and his armed guards targeted the military helicopter. The firing was so intense that the helicopter had to make an emergency landing at a nearby military base. Oseguera and two of his bodyguards were injured during the encounter. According to the army, he was surrounded in a forest area. He later died in the helicopter. Two other people who were being taken to the hospital along with him also died on the way.

Heavy damage and violence across the country

There was huge loss of life and property in this operation. According to reports, a total of 62 people died, including 25 National Guard soldiers and 34 suspected gang members. Cartel supporters blocked roads at 85 places in many states and set vehicles on fire. 2,000 additional troops were deployed to Jalisco state to bring the situation under control. President Claudia Shainbaum said that the situation is gradually returning to normal and security arrangements are being strengthened.

Oseguera’s body was taken to Mexico City and handed over to authorities. Later his remains were given to the family. It is not yet clear where he will be buried. The death of ‘El Mencho’ is being considered a major success for Mexico, but it is also clear that the fight against organized crime is not over yet. The roots of his gang are deep and may continue to pose challenges to the security agencies in the times to come.
