What is International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An International Driving License is an official document. Which is the internationally recognized version of Indian Driving License. This version is authorized under the UN Convention and proves that you are a valid licensed driver in India. The IDP contains your photograph, personal information and details of the vehicle class you will be driving. This information can be translated into many languages to make it easier for foreign authorities to understand your identity and license. The IDP is currently valid in over 150 countries. This license is generally valid for one year from the date of issue and must be carried with you at all times along with your passport and Indian driver’s license. If you don’t have this, it can be difficult to rent a car and even drive a car in many countries.
How to apply for IDP?
The process of applying for an International Driving Permit has now become very simple. You can apply online through the ‘Parivahan’ portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India.
Application Procedure: 1. Visit the website: First of all go to the official transport portal. 2. Fill Form 4A: Select ‘Form 4A’ in the online application and fill the required information. 3. Upload Documents: Copy of Valid Indian Driving License, Copy of Passport, Copy of Valid Visa, Recent Passport Size Photograph. In some cases a medical certificate may be required. You can pay the application fee through UPI, Debit/Credit Card or Net Banking. Sometimes an appointment is required at the local RTO for Aadhaar verification.
After the application is successfully submitted and verified, your IDP permit is sent to your registered address in approximately 3 to 7 working days.
