Linguistic pride and cultural importance

The word ‘Keralaam’ has deep historical significance for the Malayalam speaking people. Ever since the reorganization of states on linguistic basis in 1956, there was a movement to create a single state ‘Keralam’ by merging the Malayalam speaking areas. The government and local experts believe that the name ‘Kerala’ is a legacy of the colonial period, while the name ‘Keralam’ reflects the original linguistic identity and cultural heritage of the state.

After the recent renaming of Bihar’s ‘Gaya’ city to ‘Gayaji’, Kerala’s name change is another important step in India paying respect to its regional and linguistic heritage.
