Man Drives Etios For 1 Million Km: Why Do Toyotas Last So Long?

These days, driving a car for one lakh kilometres is common. Two lakh is impressive. But 10 lakh (1 million) kilometres? That is a different league altogether. A Toyota Etios in Brazil has reportedly achieved this milestone, highlighting why this brand and its cars are often associated with durability and reliability. Strict adherence to quality standards right from the production phase seems to be the reason behind the jaw-dropping life spans of Toyota cars.

Etios Clocks 10 Lakh Kilometers

Photos and details of this Etios from Brazil were shared on the X (previously Twitter) handle ‘Mileage Impossible’. The car here, is a 2013 Toyota Etios hatchback, from Brazil.

‘Etios’ is a familiar name. In India, the sedan was called Etios and the hatchback ‘Etios Liva’. The car seen in the pictures looks almost like the model that was on sale here. The Brazilian spec, however, had a different set of engines- the hatchback had 1.3L flex fuel (Ethanol/petrol) engine while the sedan and cross had 1.5L flex engine.

The Etios in this case, houses a 1.3L engine under its hood. According to the post, it has been driver for over 10 lakh/ 1 million km (621,371 miles). It also mentions that the odometer reached 999,999 km in 2020- in roughly seven years. And we are now in 2026!

This car had been plying as a taxi in Brazil most of its life. The post claims it to be on its original engine, brake discs and transmission- hard to believe considering the miles it has on its odometer- how can someone drive 10 lakh kilometres without changing brake discs. Many users have raised this concern in the comments section.

Circling back, the post mentions that the clutch was replaced after 7 lakh kilometres, and spark plugs were replaced twice- at 3.50 lakh km and 7 lakh km respectively. The owner does oil changes every 10,000 km. Except for the brake discs, everything else seems believable and ‘absolutely Toyota’.

Why Do Toyotas Last So Long?

This isn’t the first time that we see people put unbelievable miles on their Toyotas. Choosing tried-and-true technology and disciplined engineering over complex tech and rigorous quality control have helped in ensuring longevity. These make Toyota cars and SUVs reliable and easy to maintain.

Toyota’s corporate culture focuses on long-term ownership rather than short-term trends. The Toyota Production System (TPS) emphasises continuous improvement (Kaizen). Any worker can stop the assembly line if they detect a defect.

The company also maintains strict quality standards for its suppliers. A part that is not perfect, is rejected immediately. The company then works with the supplier to correct it. Vehicles are also put through rigorous testing before launch. Thanks to the high QDR focus, 80% of Toyotas last for more than 20 years.

More Toyotas That Have Run 1 Million Kilometres

Even in India, there are many Toyotas that have comfortably been used for 1 million (10 lakh) kilometres. In the video above, you can see an Innova that has run over 1 million kilometres. It has been plying as an airport taxi in Kerala. The owner made sure that all services were done at authorised service centres. This is common among owners who use their Toyotas extensively.

Here’s another Innova, from Kerala’s Kannur, that has run for over 10 lakh kilometres. This, again, is a taxi and had undergone showroom services till 7 lakh kilometres. After this, the owner resorted to a local workshop managed by a former Toyota technician, for services. He has, however, been relying on genuine Toyota parts. Periodic services were done every 10,000 km.

This owner says that the brake pads last up to 1 lakh kilometres, and tyres typically get replaced after every 70,000 km. The Innova’s clutch, as stated by this owner, last for about 2.5 lakh km.

Even Ganesh Kumar, Kerala’s state transport minister, has a Toyota Qualis which he has been using for the past 25 years. The actual odometer reading of this vehicle remains unclear. The Minister is very satisfied with the ownership so far and swears that he has no plans to sell the Qualis.
