Big decision of Modi cabinet, changing the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’ Approved the proposal to rename, know the logic behind the new name
New Delhi: The Central Government has given its approval to the much awaited proposal to change the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’. This important decision was taken in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the new PMO building ‘Seva Tirtha’. This step has been taken after the Kerala Assembly passed a resolution in this regard.
With this decision, the name of the state will now be changed in official documents under the constitutional process. The Kerala government had been demanding this for a long time, the basis of which is linguistic and cultural identity.
The proposal was passed twice in the assembly
This proposal to change the name of Kerala has been passed twice in the state assembly. First of all, in August 2023, the House unanimously passed a resolution and sent it to the Centre. However, the Union Home Ministry had suggested some technical changes in it, after which the state government had to send the proposal again.
Subsequently, the Kerala Assembly again unanimously passed an amended resolution on June 24, 2024, urging the Center to change the name of the state to ‘Keralaam’ in all the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Now the Union Cabinet has given its approval to this second proposal.
The logic behind the name ‘Keralaam’
Explaining the reason behind changing the name of the state, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had argued in the Assembly that the state is called ‘Keralaam’ in Malayalam language.
“The state is called ‘Kerala’ in Malayalam and the demand for a united Kerala for the Malayalam-speaking communities has been raised strongly since the time of the national freedom struggle. But the name of the state is written as Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution.” – Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister
He stressed that this change is necessary to reflect the linguistic identity of the state. Now after the approval of the Cabinet, the process of necessary amendments in the Constitution will be initiated through a Bill in the Parliament.
