Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Will Visit India On February 26
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit India on 26 February. This will be the first leg of his three-nation visit to the Indo-Pacific region. This information was given by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) of Canada on Monday (February 24). According to Canadian experts, Carney is trying to improve India-Canada relations. During the tenure of his predecessor Justin Trudeau, relations between the two countries had reached their lowest level.
Since Carney took office, the two countries have resumed high-level talks, reinstated ambassadors to each other’s capitals and revived security and trade talks. Last year, both sides agreed to begin negotiations for a trade agreement.
According to the PMO, “Carney will work to explore new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses in trade, energy, technology and defence. Through these visits to three of Canada’s strongest Indo-Pacific partners, the Prime Minister will deepen regional relationships that are vital to our security and prosperity.”
According to the information, Prime Minister Karni will first land in Mumbai and then go to New Delhi, where he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the PMO, talks between the two leaders will cover areas such as trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), talent, culture and defence. Carney will also meet with representatives of Indian industry to identify investment opportunities in Canada and promote bilateral partnerships.
Let it be known that the tariff war started by US President Donald Trump has had a special impact on Canada. In such a situation, Carney is adopting a strategy of trade diversification and reducing dependence on America by turning towards Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. Under the proposed trade agreement, Canada wants to increase bilateral trade to more than $70 billion by 2030.
After India, Carney will visit Australia and Japan. In Australia he will meet Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, where there will be discussions on enhancing cooperation on defence, maritime security, critical minerals, trade and advanced technology. In Japan he will meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo. There will be discussions on issues like clean energy, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals, food security and support for a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Carney’s visit is being considered an important step towards strengthening Canada’s strategic and economic partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.
