Center increased MSP for raw jute by Rs 275 per quintal.

The central government on Tuesday announced increase in MSP for raw jute. This will help jute farmers to earn more profits on their crop than before. The Minimum Support Price (MSP) of raw jute for the marketing season 2026-27 was approved in the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs constituted under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The MSP of raw jute (TD-3 grade) for the 2026-27 season has been fixed at Rs 5,925 per quintal, the official statement said. This will ensure a profit of 61.8 percent on the all India weighted average production cost of jute. This announced MSP of raw jute for the marketing season 2026-27 is in line with the principle of setting the MSP at at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production announced by the Government in Budget 2018-19.

The statement further said that the MSP of raw jute for marketing season 2026-27 is higher by Rs 275 per quintal compared to the previous marketing season 2025-26. The government has increased the MSP of raw jute from Rs 2,400 per quintal in 2014-15 to Rs 5,925 per quintal in 2026-27, which represents an increase of Rs 3,525 per quintal (2.5 times).

The MSP amount paid to jute growing farmers during the period 2014-15 to 2025-26 was Rs 1342 crore, while the amount paid during the period 2004-05 to 2013-14 was Rs 441 crore.

The Government stated that Jute Corporation of India (JCI) will continue to function as the nodal agency of the Central Government for conducting price support operations and any loss incurred in such operations will be fully compensated by the Central Government.

India is the world’s largest producer of raw jute, with more than 99 percent of its production concentrated in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Due to favorable alluvial soil and climate, West Bengal produces more than 80 percent of the total production, followed by Bihar and Assam.
