Born on February 25, 1974 in Mumbai, India, Divya Bharti entered the film industry at a young age and soon became a sensation. If she were among us today, she would have celebrated her 52nd birthday. However, his sudden death on April 5, 1993 at the age of 19 left behind a legacy shrouded in mystery and speculation.
First meeting and beginning of love
It was around 1991-92. Divya Bharti was a rising heroine at that time. She was shooting for the film ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’, in which Govinda was the hero. Sajid Nadiadwala was a producer and he used to come to the set to meet Govinda. One day he met Divya on the set. According to reports, Sajid fell in love with Divya at first sight. Divya also got impressed by him. Gradually their friendship grew and turned into love. Both of them started spending a lot of time together, started talking and came closer to each other. Divya had also decided to get married at the age of 18 because her name was associated with many actors at the peak of stardom. To put an end to the rumours, she married Sajid Nadiadwala. Since Sajid was a Muslim, Divya accepted Islam and became Sana Nadiawala.
Marriage decision and private marriage
Divya was still very young, she was about to turn 18 years old. But both of them decided to get married. Divya was from a Hindu family, father was Punjabi, mother Maharashtrian Sajid was Muslim. Divya’s father Om Prakash Bharti was strictly against this relationship. He did not want Divya to be in a relationship with any producer. Divya’s mother Mita Bharti liked Sajid, but things were not working out at home because of her father. At that time Divya’s career was at its peak. Films like ‘Deewana’, ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’, ‘Vishwatma’ were becoming hits. If the news of marriage had spread, it could have affected her career, because in the 90s, married heroines used to get less roles. Therefore, Divya decided to get married as soon as she turned 18. On May 10, 1992, a very small marriage took place at Sajid’s Versova house. Only one Qazi, Divya’s hairdresser Sandhya and her husband became witnesses. Divya accepted Islam and changed her name to Sana Nadiadwala. Even after marriage, Divya remained in her parents’ house as if nothing had happened. She would occasionally meet Sajid, but from outside everything seemed normal. The father had no idea at all.
Mother knew, but father did not
Divya’s mother Mita Bharti herself had told in an old interview Bollywood Hungama, ‘Sajid used to come to the sets to meet Govinda, it was there that he met Divya. The same day Divya asked me, mother, what do you think about Sajid? I said he was good. After a few days, Divya asked if she could marry Sajid. I said ask dad but dad was against it. Mother refused, but Divya still got married. Even after marriage, she stayed in her parents’ house for 4-5 months and her father did not know anything.
Big reveal on Diwali day
A few months after the marriage, Sajid went to Divya’s house on the festival of Diwali. He was talking to Divya’s father. Then Sajid clearly said, ‘Uncle, Divya and I are married.’ The father was completely stunned. She didn’t say anything. After Sajid left, she asked Mita why didn’t you tell me? Mita said, ‘I told Divya to tell herself.’ Father remained silent for two days. On the third day he said, ‘Come, call Sajid home. Now whatever’s done, is done. Sad end and Sajid’s company
Just 11 months after marriage, on April 5, 1993, Divya died after falling from the balcony of her apartment at the age of just 19. The cause of death is still a mystery, it is considered an accident, but many questions remain unresolved. Sajid was deeply shocked but he never left Divya’s family. From the day of marriage, he considered Divya’s parents as his family. Even after Divya’s departure, Sajid took care of her, like a son does. Om Prakash Bharti and Mita Bharti remained a part of Sajid’s life. In the year 2000, Sajid married journalist Warda Khan. Even today Divya’s family is connected with her. Varda had said in an interview that Divya is still in her life, and her children call Divya ‘Badi Maa’. The story of Divya and Sajid was short, but so deep that it touches the heart even today.
