Folk traditions such as Daiva and Bootha Kola, depicted in the film Kantara, are deeply rooted in the religious and cultural identity of Karnataka. It is alleged that Ranveer Singh imitated these divine traditions in a humorous manner during an event/performance, thereby hurting the religious sentiments of some organizations and people. After this a complaint was lodged against him.

Why did people and organizations get angry?

People associated with local organizations and traditions say that Daiva is not a character or a part of entertainment, but is a subject of reverence. They allege that such imitation on the film stage made fun of the tradition, which hurt religious sentiments. This resentment deepened the dispute.

Ranveer Singh’s clarification

As the controversy escalated, Ranveer Singh said that his intention was not to hurt any community or tradition. He called it an artist’s spontaneous expression and said it was being misrepresented. Despite this, the matter did not calm down and took a legal turn.

Why did the matter reach the High Court?

Ranveer Singh filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court to seek relief from the complaints registered against him and possible legal action. In the petition, he appealed to the court to quash the case registered against him or at least give him interim relief, because this case is related to freedom of expression.

what could happen next

Now the Karnataka High Court is keeping an eye on this entire controversy. The court will decide what is the limit of creative freedom of artists and how to balance respect for folk-religious traditions. This decision may impact not only Ranveer Singh but also such cases in future.
