Miraculous Flame Temple of Kangra where 9 lights never extinguish
Jwala Devi Temple, situated amidst the Shivalik hills of Himachal, is world famous for its mysterious nine lights. It is considered to be one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Mata Sati, where instead of the idol of the goddess, the natural flames emanating from the womb of the earth are worshipped. Even today people have not been able to solve the mystery of these flames that have been burning for thousands of years.
It is said that from Mughal Emperor Akbar to modern scientists, many people tried to extinguish these lights or find their source but all of them were not successful. This temple is not only a center of religious devotion but is also a big challenge for people who believe in science.

Mystery and importance of Jwala Mandir

Flames emerge from nine different places within the temple, which are considered to symbolize different forms of the goddess. Prominent among these is Mahakali which is the main light which is a symbol of power. Apart from this, the flame of mother keeps burning in the form of Annapurna, Chandi, Hinglaj, Vindhyavasini, Mahalakshmi, Saraswati, Ambika and Anjani.
Akbar’s necklace and golden umbrella
According to history, Akbar had canal water poured on these lights to extinguish them but the flames did not go out. After realizing his mistake, Akbar offered a gold umbrella worth one and a quarter rupees to the goddess. There are beliefs that the goddess did not accept the offering and the gold immediately turned into an unknown metal, which is still present in the temple.

scientific approach
Geologists believe that there may be reserves of natural gas like methane beneath these hills, which comes out and burns through the many holes present there. However, despite research, the exact source of the gas or its quantity has not been known till date.
Place among 51 Shaktipeeths
According to mythology, when Lord Vishnu cut the body of Mata Sati into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra, Mata’s tongue fell here. That is why a wonderful confluence of words and fire is seen here.
