5 OTT Platforms Ban: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday blocked five OTT platforms for streaming ‘obscene’ content. The platforms that were correctly blocked include Mood XVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Jugnu. As part of the process of blocking such platforms, the government directs internet service providers to block access to OTT platforms under the Information Technology Rules 2021 and laws against obscenity.

Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, gives the Center the power to block online content for various reasons. In July last year, the Center had banned several apps and websites as they were allegedly streaming obscene, lewd and ‘pornographic’ content.

Was full of obscene and lewd content

According to media reports, the 25 apps and websites that were targeted in this action included ALTBalaji, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite and Gulab App. This action was taken when the content being streamed on these platforms was found to be in “serious violation” of Indian laws. Many of the blocked platforms were said to be showing content with “sexual innuendo” and, in some cases, lengthy scenes of “sexually explicit acts involving nudity” that were described as “pornographic in nature”. Much of the content had “no meaningful story, theme or social message” and instead contained “obscene and lewd” visuals.
