Taapsee Pannu is an actor par excellence. Whether her films have been able to do well or not in terms of box office numbers, she has always received accolades for her acting prowess. From critics to the audience, Taapsee is one of those new-age actresses who is truly appreciated for her skills. At the moment, she is enjoying all the love and appreciation that has been coming her way for her stellar performance in the Anubhav Sinha directorial ‘Assi.’ Recently, she also opened up about how a film like the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Dunki’ is difficult to land, especially for an actress like her.
In a recent conversation with The Screen, Taapsee spoke about how she had taken up commercial films while she was in the midst of working on serious films like ‘Thappad’ or even her latest release, ‘Assi.’ She reflected on what makes her choose these serious projects despite the success of her big commercial film, ‘Dunki.’ ‘
Taapsee revealed that she was only able to bag a project like Dunki because the role demanded somebody like her. She followed this up by expressing her thoughts on how the film was difficult for her to get, considering that she is not a commercial actress.
She said, “A film like Dunki is difficult to get for someone like me because I’m not some commercial, mainstream, viable heroine. I got it because that role probably needed someone like me. That’s what I’ve been told. That’s because I did films like Assi and Gandhari before. This is what has given me my space and identity in the industry. So, this is my reality. Dunki is a gift I get for these 10 years. I don’t know how long it will take for me to get another one. It’s a struggle because they still have to come to terms with, ‘Oh, we have to show her all glammed up.’ I started my career in the South with massy films. I began my Hindi career with David Dhawan. It doesn’t get more commercial and in-your-face than that.”
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Dunki was released in theatres in 2023, starring Shah Rukh Khan along with Taapsee, Boman Irani, Anil Grover, and Vikram Kochhar. The film also starred Vicky Kaushal in a cameo role.
