Where did the controversy start?

The root of this entire controversy is the FIR which Ashutosh Brahmachari lodged against Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranar Saraswati on charges of sexual exploitation. The matter reached the court, where after instructions the police started investigation. After the allegations came to light, sharp reactions were seen in religious circles. Some are considering it a serious allegation, while some are calling it an attack on the saint tradition.

Why did the controversy increase due to the statement of Falahari Maharaj?

The matter further flared up when Falahari Maharaj publicly announced that whoever would “cut off the nose” and hit the shoes of Ashutosh Brahmachari would be given a reward of Rs 21 lakh. In this statement, he also made serious personal allegations against Ashutosh Brahmachari and used derogatory words against him. Such a statement is not only considered socially provocative, but can also be considered a serious crime by law.

Describing Ashutosh Brahmachari as a ‘cow killer’ and a ‘criminal’, he said that he has hurt the faith of 125 crore Hindus by making disgusting allegations against Shankaracharya. He says that Shankaracharya is revered by the Hindu society and the Sanatani society is feeling insulted by such allegations.

This entire controversy is being linked to the incident in Ramayana in which Lakshman cut off Surpanakha’s nose. After the statement of “nose cutting”, some people are raising questions linking this incident symbolically. In today’s controversy, who is “Lakshman” and who is “Surpanakha”? However, this comparison is purely symbolic and has no direct relation with actual events.

What is the real issue?

This dispute is going on at many levels. On one hand there are serious allegations and their investigation, on the other hand the question of religious faith and saint tradition.
