Ban on false content made through AI and deepfake videos
Delhi High Court has imposed a complete ban on using the name, image, voice and personality traits of Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev in all formats and mediums without permission. This also includes content made from AI and deepfake videos. Justice Jyoti Singh said in the interim order that such unauthorized deepfake videos and web pages misuse Ramdev’s credibility. In these he is shown promoting others’ products or medicines.
The plaintiff was associated with the products
The Delhi High Court found that the unauthorized content not only infringes the image, voice and personality rights of yoga guru Baba Ramdev, but goes a step further and also causes harm to him. The court said that in these videos and content, Ramdev’s images have been distorted using modern technology like AI and he has been associated with people and products with whom he has no connection. In the order passed on February 18, the court made it clear that this could damage Ramdev’s public image and credibility. The court also directed social media and other platforms to immediately remove such content.
Accusation of trying to take advantage
Yoga guru Baba Ramdev told the Delhi High Court that his AI-generated deepfake videos, edited photos and fake social media accounts are present on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X and various e-commerce websites. Ramdev alleged in the court that his image has been misused through these deepfake videos, edited photographs and fake accounts. He said that these activities violate his personality rights and are being done to take advantage of others. In this case, the Delhi High Court has ordered a ban on using his personality without permission in all formats and mediums, which also includes content made from AI and deepfakes.
Order to remove objectionable material
Delhi High Court has completely banned the use of Baba Ramdev’s name, voice, photo and any feature related to personality without permission. The court ordered that all social media and digital platforms will have to remove objectionable content within 72 hours of receiving the order. The court also made it clear that till the next hearing, all the defendants cannot make any use of Ramdev’s name or identity without permission, whether for commercial or personal gain. This also includes deepfake videos, voice clones or content made through any technology. The court said that doing so could harm Ramdev’s image and reputation.
