Mumbai, 25 February. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has decided its candidate for the assembly by-election on Baramati seat in the form of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. The seat had become vacant after the death of Sunetra’s husband and former Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28. According to the information received, this decision was taken in an important meeting of the party.
The then NCP chief Ajit Pawar had won the Baramati seat in the 2024 assembly elections by 1,00,899 votes against his nephew and NCP (SP) candidate Yugendra Pawar. He got 1,81,132 votes while Yugendra got 80,233 votes.
Parth Pawar’s nomination for Rajya Sabha
In the NCP meeting, the party leadership also finalized the nomination of late Ajit Pawar’s son Parth Pawar for Rajya Sabha. He will replace his mother Sunetra Pawar in the Upper House. After the death of her husband, Sunetra has become the Deputy CM in the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra. It is noteworthy that elections are to be held on March 16 for seven vacant seats of Rajya Sabha in Maharashtra.
Sunetra Pawar will also be elected NCP chief
Meanwhile, the NCP is scheduled to elect its new national president on Thursday, February 26. The elections are going to be held in Worli Dome, Mumbai, where MLAs, MPs and senior officials of the party will be present. Party sources have confirmed that Sunetra Pawar’s name will be officially approved as the national president of the party.
Actually, Sunetra’s promotion has happened after recent developments within the party. After the death of Ajit Pawar in the plane crash, the party leadership had unanimously agreed to his name for the top organizational post. Sunetra Pawar is currently the Deputy CM in the Mahayuti government and also the leader of the NCP legislature party.
