Petrol will change from April 1, 2026, what will be the impact on your bike and car? Know the complete mathematics of E20 and RON 95
Meaning of RON 95: If you drive a bike or a car, then this news is directly related to both your pocket and the vehicle. The government has decided that from April 1, 2026, petrol sold across the country will be E20 and will have at least “RON 95 (Research Octane Number)” Will be mandatory. That means now maximum 20% ethanol will be mixed in petrol.
What is E20 petrol and why was the decision taken?
E20 means petrol in which up to 20 percent ethanol is mixed. Ethanol is mainly prepared from crops like sugarcane and maize. The aim of this step is to reduce crude oil imports, reduce pollution and increase the income of farmers.
The government has already achieved the target of 10% ethanol blending ahead of schedule. Taking the same success forward, E20 is now being implemented. This will burn fuel in a cleaner manner and reduce smoke emitted from vehicles.
What will be the impact on new and old vehicles?
According to officials associated with the auto industry, most of the vehicles manufactured in India after 2023-25 have been designed compatible with E20. Therefore, there is no possibility of major technical problems in new cars and bikes. However, mileage may reduce by 3 to 7 percent in old vehicles. The energy efficiency of ethanol is slightly less than that of petrol, due to which there may be a slight difference in fuel consumption.
Why is the requirement of RON 95 necessary?
The government has introduced “RON 95” The decision to make it mandatory has been taken so that the engine remains safe. RON i.e. Research Octane Number, tells how much petrol protects against premature burning (knocking) in the engine.
Knocking occurs when fuel burns prematurely or unevenly. This causes a ping-like sound in the engine and can damage the engine in the long run. The higher the RON, the better the petrol will prevent knocking and maintain engine performance.

E20 petrol will be available across the country
The Petroleum Ministry, in a notification dated February 17, has clarified that all petroleum companies will sell 20% ethanol blended motor spirit (petrol) as per Bureau of Indian Standards standards in states and union territories, with a minimum of RON 95. However, under special circumstances, the Central Government may grant exemption to some areas for a limited period of time. It is clear that a new era of petrol is going to start from 2026. In such a situation, vehicle owners would be wise to check the compatibility of their vehicle from now on.
