Free travel by BEST buses in Mumbai; A big announcement in the budget

BMC Budget 2026 : Good news for Mumbaikars. You will now get a chance to travel for free in Mumbai’s BEST bus. This was announced while presenting the budget of Mumbai Municipal Corporation today. But this free journey can be done only by school children. This trip was made free of cost to the students of 1st to 10th standard. But other ordinary Mumbaikars will have to travel by taking tickets as before.

The Mumbai Municipal Corporation Administration presented the education department’s budget of Rs 4248.08 crore for the financial year 2026-27 to the education committee chairman on Wednesday. This has seen an increase of Rs 573.98 crore compared to the revised budget of the current financial year. It has a special emphasis on infrastructure, digital education, student welfare and quality enhancement. This time free ST travel has been provided to school students. Another thing is that no separate provision has been made for the development of Marathi schools in the budget of Mumbai Municipal Corporation. But on the other hand, provision of 3 crore 87 lakhs has been made for the English language laboratory. Mumbai Municipal Corporation has kept its focus on skill based education. Astronomy laboratories set up in 55 schools in the city will be started in 40 more schools. Also, STEM robotics labs are functioning in 175 schools. In fact there were not enough facilities for school students in Mumbai to go to school. Parents also used to worry a lot while sending their children to school. In addition, school children were also affected by the traffic jams in Mumbai. In this background, uniformed students of Mahanagara Palika School will now be able to travel by ‘Best’ bus free of cost. For this special and public welfare scheme, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has allocated as much as 8.7 million crores in the budget. Due to this scheme of BMC, there is an atmosphere of happiness among students and municipalities. Children will now be able to travel comfortably and for free in BEST buses. The cost of a private vehicle will be saved.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC Budget 2026) education department has an arrears of 7 thousand 241.38 crores with the state government. 5655.30 crore for primary education and 1586.08 crore for secondary education, a total amount of 7241.38 crore is due from the state government to Mumbai Municipal Corporation till 31 March 2025.
