Jharkhand government filed a review petition in the Supreme Court on the order related to Saranda Sanctuary, claims MLA Saryu Roy.
Desk: JDU MLA from Jamshedpur Saryu Roy on Thursday claimed that the Jharkhand government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking clarification on certain aspects of its earlier order declaring Saranda Forest Division as a wildlife sanctuary. The Jharkhand government will not comply with the Supreme Court order directing it to declare 314.68 square kilometer area of Saranda Forest Division as a wildlife sanctuary in its present form. Instead, the state government will file a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking clarification on specific points of the order.

Sanctuary notification deadline missed
According to the Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, the Supreme Court order passed on November 13, 2025, had directed the state to notify sanctuaries within three months, except in six specific areas. The deadline to comply with this judicial direction expired on February 12, 2026. However, the state government has not yet issued a formal notification to declare Saranda Forest Division as a wildlife sanctuary.
In the Assembly, MLA Saryu Roy questioned the government’s intention and asked whether the state government was actually planning to set up wildlife areas. The government clarified that instead of implementing the order in letter and spirit, it has opted to file a review petition. “The government’s reply confirms that they intend to file a review petition, but they have failed to provide important details,” Roy said in his press release. The written reply given by the State Government lacks specific information on the following subjects.

introduction of saranda
Saranda Forest Division is ecologically important, often referred to as the “Land of Seven Hundred Hills” and is home to one of the largest sal forests in Asia. The Supreme Court’s intervention was aimed at protecting the area’s biodiversity from extensive mining and industrial pressure. The filing of a review petition by the state indicates a conflict between protection orders and local administrative or industrial interests.
