What are Telugu weddings like?

Telugu weddings are linked to the traditions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. These are usually performed with Vedic mantras in the presence of a Pandit and can last for several days. Many rituals are performed in this marriage.

  • Nishchitartham means performing the engagement ritual.
  • In Kanyadaan, the girl’s parents hand over their daughter to the groom.
  • In the Jilakare Bellam custom, the bride and groom apply a paste of cumin and jaggery on each other’s heads, which is a symbol of togetherness.
  • While wearing Mangalsutra, the groom ties Mangalsutra around the neck of the bride.
  • In the Saptapadi ritual, seven promises are made in front of the fire by taking seven rounds.
  • In Telugu weddings, the Talambaralu custom is followed, in which the couple pours rice on each other, which is a sign of happiness.
  • Here marriage is done with fire as a witness. The food is completely vegetarian and is served on banana leaves. The bride is adorned in silk saree and gold jewellery, while the groom wears a dhoti.

Know about Kodava Wedding

Kodava weddings are associated with the Kodagu (Coorg) region of Karnataka. There are no pundits in these marriages. Only the elders of the family perform all the rituals.

  • These celebrations usually last for two days and are known as Urkuduwa and Mangala.
  • In Bale Birud, the groom symbolically cuts the stem of the banana, which is a sign of courage and protection.
  • The Sammanda Kodupo ritual is associated with granting rights to the bride in the groom’s family.
  • Coin bag ritual is performed, in which a small bag of coins is tied in the bride’s saree.
  • In the Pathak ritual, the mother makes the daughter wear a gold coin necklace, which is a sign of marriage.
  • Here, instead of fire, prayers are offered in front of a lamp and ancestors are remembered.

What are the similarities and differences between the two customs?

In both weddings, rice is used as a blessing and silk clothes and traditional jewelery are important. The difference is that Telugu wedding is celebrated with mantras and fire, whereas Kodava wedding is celebrated without a pandit and without fire, remembering the people and ancestors.
