DGCA Revises Air Ticket Refund Rules: No charge will have to be paid for canceling air ticket within 48 hours, a relief decision of DGCA

New Delhi. If you also travel by plane then this is definitely useful news for you. The Directorate Journal of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken a relief decision for air passengers and changed the rules of ticket cancellation. According to the new rule, if a passenger cancels his ticket within 48 hours of booking the ticket or wants to change the journey, then no charge will have to be paid for it. Passengers will now get a look-in period of 48 hours. These new rules will come into effect from next month, 26 March 2026.

However, if the fare of the new flight is higher due to change in ticket, the passenger will have to pay the difference. DGCA has also imposed some conditions along with this new rule. Under this, the facility of ticket cancellation or change without deducting any charge will be available only if the flight for domestic travel is at least 7 days later and similarly, the flight for international travel is at least 15 days later. Also, the ticket should be booked directly from the website of the concerned airline. DGCA has also said that if there is a mistake in the name while booking the ticket, then the airline company will not charge any fee for the correction in the name if it is informed within 24 hours.

DGCA has also clarified that the airlines will be responsible for refund on tickets purchased through travel agents or various portals. Along with this, DGCA has given instructions to the airline companies to complete the refund process in 14 working days. DGCA has said that refund is mandatory within 7 days if payment is made by credit card and immediate refund if payment is made in cash. Airline companies have also been instructed to provide information about ticket refund policies on their websites.
