What is Lanz Bulldog HL-12?

The name of this vintage tractor is Lanz Bulldog HL-12, which was made in Germany in 1920. This machine, once used for farming and running mills, has now become a precious symbol of industrial heritage.

Specialty of this tractor?

The Lanz Bulldog HL-12 was a revolutionary machine of its time. It had a single cylinder ‘hot-bulb’ engine, which had to be heated a lot before starting. Once started, it produced tremendous power and torque even at low speeds. This was the reason why this tractor was used for every heavy work, from plowing the fields to running water pumps and grain mills.

Unique ability to run on any oil

The biggest feature of this tractor was that it ran on crude oil. Not only this, it could also work on vegetable oil and waste oil. In the 1920s, making a tractor that could run on different types of oil was no less than a great technological miracle. At a time when machines were dependent on limited fuel, this feature was considered unique in itself. It was prepared by German engineer Heinrich Lanz.

How did it get its name?

Actually, this machine was named “Bulldog” because of the special design of its engine. The cylinder head of the hot-bulb engine was protruding forward and slightly bulging, which looked like the face of a Bulldog dog.
