Changes in demography due to encroachment and infiltration can be dangerous for the culture, history and geography of the country. He announced that a high-level committee would be constituted to review demographic changes. This committee will not be limited to only the border areas, but will assess the situation of the entire country and give necessary suggestions.

Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand are more affected

Shah said that the states most affected by infiltration are West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand. He claimed that after the upcoming elections in Bengal, if the Bharatiya Janata Party government is formed, the work of fencing the border will be given priority. He said that it is our commitment to strengthen border security and stop illegal activities. The infiltrators will be identified and sent out of the country as per legal procedure.

Special focus on Seemanchal

Referring to the Seemanchal region, Shah said that at the time of formation of the government in Bihar, it was promised that there would be a permanent solution to the problem of illegal infiltration from this area. He reiterated that the government stands by its promise and action will be taken in a phased manner. Praising the border security forces, he said that their contribution in protecting the borders is extremely important and the government will provide them all necessary resources.

Instructions for speeding up the army base in Kishanganj

The most important issue of the meeting was the proposed army base camps in Kochadhaman, Bahadurganj and Natuapara. These three places are considered very important from strategic point of view. There have been local level protests and procedural hurdles regarding land acquisition for a long time. The Home Minister told the officials in clear words that delay in plans related to the country’s security will not be tolerated. He directed that the district administration should establish direct communication with the villagers, resolve their doubts and make the compensation process completely transparent.

Preparation for strict vigil on ‘chicken neck’

The area of Kishanganj is also important from strategic point of view because it is very close to the Siliguri Corridor called ‘Chicken Neck’. This narrow corridor connects North-East India with the rest of the country. The Home Minister clearly said that the intelligence system in this area should be further strengthened. It was agreed to further upgrade modern drone surveillance, technical surveillance and communication systems so that real-time information about every activity across the border reaches the headquarters.
