Aadhaar Card Big Update 2026: 2.5 crore Aadhaar cards deactivated across the country! Is your Aadhaar also in danger? Know the new rules

New Delhi. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched the biggest ever clean-up drive to maintain the accuracy of the Aadhaar database. According to the latest reports, UIDAI has deactivated more than 2.5 crore Aadhaar numbers so far. This step has been taken mainly to prevent misuse of Aadhaar of deceased persons and to curb identity fraud. If your Aadhaar card is also 10 years old and you have not updated it, then you need to be careful. Why were 2.5 crore Aadhaar cards closed? According to UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, making the Aadhaar database error-free is the priority of the government. Following are the main reasons for deactivation of Aadhaar cards: Records of dead persons: More than 2.5 crore Aadhaar numbers belonged to people who have died, but their Aadhaar was being used for pension, ration or other government benefits. Incomplete data: Biometric or demographic information in many Aadhaar cards was found to be incomplete or doubtful. 10-year old records: Cards that have been made for more than 10 years and have not had a ‘document update’ even once are now under the radar. Is your Aadhaar secure or not? Keeping an eye on these 3 categories, the government has clarified that action is being taken only on those Aadhaar cards that fall in these categories: Old Aadhaar cards: Those that have not been updated for 10 years. Incorrect documents: Those in whose records fake or duplicate documents have been found. Inactive biometrics: In case of children, not getting the mandatory biometric update (MBU) done at the age of 5-7 years and 15-17 years can lead to temporary stoppage of Aadhaar. New Fees and Rules 2026 UIDAI has made some changes in the updated fees and rules for the year 2026: Free Update: The facility to update documents online through the ‘myAadhaar’ portal is absolutely free till June 14, 2026. Center Fee: If you go to the Aadhaar center to get the update done, then you will have to pay ₹ 75 for demographic update (name, address, date of birth). Biometric Update: Photo, fingerprint or The fee for Iris update has been fixed at ₹125. Relief for children: Mandatory biometric update for children aged 7 to 15 years will be free till September 30, 2026. New ‘auto-verification’ system from January 2026 UIDAI has introduced a new system from January 2026, in which your Aadhaar data will be automatically cross-verified with other government databases (like PAN, passport and voter ID). Its purpose is to ensure that the same person does not have different information in different databases. This system will help in completely eliminating fraud.
