NCERT Book Row: On apologizing during the hearing in NCERT book case, CJI said – This is not enough, an attempt was made to insult the dignity of the judiciary.
NCERT Book Row: The Supreme Court has taken a strict stance regarding the controversial portion of the NCERT’s Class 8 book. The controversy arising out of the passage on ‘corruption in the judiciary’ in the book was heard in the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi. The Chief Justice made a strong comment and said that NCERT’s apology in this matter is not enough. He said that it would be wrong to allow such a book to reach children. It is important to maintain the dignity of the judiciary. Issuing notice to the Education Secretary and NCERT, the Supreme Court said that the hearing will continue until the court is satisfied.

NCERT Director will have to explain the reason
During the hearing, NCERT said that they are ready to apologize unconditionally. The controversial portion will also be removed from the book. On this, Chief Justice Surya Kant said that merely apologizing and removing objectionable parts from the book is not enough. The Director of NCERT will have to explain the reason. This is a step taken thoughtfully. The court asked why this case should not be considered contempt? Chief Justice Surya Kant also directed to immediately remove online copies.
No one is allowed to defame the judiciary: CJI

It is noteworthy that on Wednesday, senior lawyers Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Mukul Rohatgi had raised this matter before the CJI. After this, Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant expressed strong displeasure over the chapter ‘Corruption in Judiciary’ in the NCERT book. CJI said that no one will be allowed to defame the judiciary. Expressing his displeasure, the CJI said that being the head of the institution, I have always fulfilled my responsibilities. I will not allow anyone to defame the judiciary. I will not allow this at any cost, no matter how big someone is. The law will take its course. I know how to deal with it. I am taking suo motu cognizance.
Actually, NCERT released the new social science book of class 8 on February 24, but one of the chapters of the book had a section on ‘Corruption in Judiciary’. However, after the Supreme Court’s strong remarks, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has apologized and banned the distribution of the Class 8 book containing the controversial chapter. After the matter came to light, the School Education and Literacy Department immediately directed that the distribution of this book be stopped until further notice. Following the order, NCERT has banned the supply of the book.
In a statement, NCERT admitted that the mistake was unintentional. There was no intention to reduce the dignity of any institution. Now this chapter will be rewritten. For this, advice will be taken from the concerned authorities. The corrected book will be given to the students at the beginning of the academic session 2026-27. NCERT has expressed regret over this mistake and apologized and said that full care will be taken to ensure that such mistake does not happen in future.
