Authorities probe passenger’s claim of $14 pho at Vietnam airport
A photo shared by a passenger on social media shows a bowl of beef pho priced at VND346,000 (US$14) at Cam Ranh International Airport in Khanh Hoa Province, central Vietnam.
A Hanoi passenger said he was charged VND346,000 (US$14) for a bowl of pho at Cam Ranh International Airport in south-central Vietnam, prompting authorities to investigate.
He landed at the airport in Khanh Hoa Province at around 11 p.m. on Monday and noticed a pho stall still open on the terminal’s second floor, Your Three newspaper reported.
He looked at the menu cursorily before placing his order.
The staff presented several choices, including beef, chicken and special pho, and he opted for a standard bowl of beef pho.
After finishing the meal, he said he was surprised to learn the price was VND346,000. He asked the staff to reconfirm the amount, but decided not to dispute the charge.
He then posted a photo of beef pho served at the airport on social media.
He said he has lived and worked in Japan for many years, and eaten pho at numerous international airports, but never seen such a high price.
Authorities conducted an inspection based on his complaints at the airport and obtained camera footage from the restaurant.
It showed the man did not check the prices before ordering but the staff discussed the price with him before serving the dish, Cong An Nhan Dan newspaper reported.
The restaurant manager said the pho ordered by the passenger was made with Wagyu beef, a premium variety originating from Japan.
Pham Thanh Son, general director of Cam Ranh International Airport Company, said restaurants at the airport are required to publicly display prices in several languages, including Vietnamese, English, Chinese, and Korean, Lao Dong newspaper reported.
A bowl of pho in Vietnam normally costs VND35,000-100,000 depending on toppings.
