Lucknow. The Income Tax Department on Wednesday raided the houses and premises of BSP’s lone MLA Umashankar Singh and his close associates in UP. Now, according to media reports, Rs 10 crore cash has been recovered from the house of BSP MLA Umashankar Singh in Vipul Khand of Gomtinagar and from his close relatives in the Income Tax Department raid. Income tax raids were continuing at other locations on Thursday afternoon also. Umashankar Singh had won the election from Rosra assembly seat in Ballia district of UP on BSP ticket. Income Tax Department officers had raided 30 places in Lucknow, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Ballia and Kaushambi on Wednesday. A team of more than 50 officers was involved in the raids conducted in the morning.
Three teams of the Income Tax Department raided the house of BSP MLA Umashankar Singh, his company’s office and the premises of close contractor Faizi in Lucknow. At the same time, in Sonbhadra, many people including mining businessman CB Gupta, close to Umashankar Singh, were raided. The name of Umashankar Singh’s company is Chatrashakti Construction and Sai Ram Enterprises. According to reports, these companies do mining and road related work. According to the news, last year CAG had said in its report that Rs 60 crore was lost to the government treasury due to illegal mining in Sonbhadra. It is believed that the raids conducted on Umashankar Singh and his close associates may have been due to this CAG report.

BSP MLA Umashankar Singh is suffering from cancer. His income tax raids were termed wrong by his colleague and Yogi government minister Dinesh Pratap Singh, BSP supremo Mayawati and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. Dinesh Pratap Singh had written in a social media post that Umashankar Singh is suffering from cancer and cannot even come to the assembly. He had written that even doctors and nurses are not allowed to go to his house. Dinesh Pratap had written that if there is any harm to the life of Umashankar Singh then this insensitive organization will be responsible. He had also written that in such circumstances, even in the rarest of crimes, the honorable courts acquit the accused on the basis of mercy by accepting the petition.
