DGCA changes airline ticket refund rules
There has been a big relief for air passengers. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued new refund rules, under which no additional charges will be charged for 48 hours for cancellation or change of ticket.
According to DGCA, passengers can cancel or change their tickets within 48 hours of ticket booking and there will be no additional charges for this. Additionally, if there is a mistake in the name at the time of ticket booking and the ticket has been booked directly from the airline’s website, no additional charges will be levied for name correction if the mistake is reported within 24 hours of booking.
DGCA makes changes in airline ticket refund and medical emergency rules
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has clarified that if the ticket is purchased through a travel agent or online portal, the responsibility of refund will be on the airline, as agents are appointed representatives of the airline. Airlines will ensure that the refund process is completed within 14 working days.
Apart from this, the rules have also been amended to provide more convenience to the passenger in case of cancellation of ticket due to any medical emergency.
Changes in ticket cancellation rules
In the revised CAR issued on February 24, the rules for cancellation of tickets in case of any medical emergency of passengers have been changed. These changes have been made in view of the increasing complaints by passengers about delay in refunds.
The issue had also come up during the disruption of an IndiGo flight in December 2025, when the Civil Aviation Ministry had directed the airline to complete the pending refunds within the stipulated time frame. The new rules aim to make the refund process easier for passengers and ensure airline accountability.
