Did an earthquake hit Kolkata today? Know more
Residents across Kolkata and parts of West Bengal reported feeling tremors on Friday afternoon, triggering concerns about a possible earthquake in the region. The shaking was also reported near Dhaka, Bangladesh, where users of the Earthquake Network app logged over 40 reports within a 54 km radius, approximately 2 km from the capital.
While initial alerts suggested noticeable ground movement, official confirmation regarding the exact magnitude and epicentre was awaited at the time of reporting. Earlier in the day, app-based systems and local reports indicated mild to moderate tremors across sections of Bengal.
The latest tremor follows a series of recent seismic events in the broader Bengal region over the past few days. On February 26, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck West Sikkim and was felt widely in North Bengal, including Siliguri and Darjeeling, as well as parts of Bangladesh. Several smaller aftershocks were also recorded in the Sikkim-Darjeeling belt.
As of now, no major damage or casualties have been reported in Kolkata or nearby areas. Authorities are expected to release further updates after official seismic assessments.
