Pakistan’s counter-operation Ghazab Lil Haq started late night on Thursday (February 26, 2026). According to Pakistan’s Information Minister Ataullah Tarar, at least 133 Afghan Taliban fighters were killed and more than 200 were injured. Relations between the two neighbors have deteriorated in recent months, with land border crossings largely closed after deadly fighting in October that left more than 70 people dead on both sides.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Friday (February 27, 2026) that his country’s military can “crush” the attackers following an air strike on neighboring Afghanistan. According to the Pakistani government’s X-page, Mr Sharif said, “Our army has the full capability to crush any attacking intention.” “The entire country stands shoulder to shoulder with the Pakistan Army,” he said.

Hours after the cross-border attack on Pakistan, an airstrike took place in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul. An Afghan government spokesman said Pakistan carried out airstrikes on Kabul and two other Afghan provinces on Friday morning. The attack took place hours after Afghanistan launched a cross-border attack on Pakistan. It is the latest escalation in violence between the two volatile neighbours, which appears to be weakening the Qatar-brokered ceasefire.
