IPL 2026 set to begin on March 28, final scheduled for May 31
The Indian Premier League 2026 is likely to start on March 28, with the final scheduled on May 31. According to India Today, the new season was expected to begin on March 26, but the date has been changed. It will give some more time to the franchises for preparations. The meeting of the governing council of the IPL will be held next week to finalise the dates. The meeting will confirm the schedule, including the opening game and the venue for the final.
Once everything is approved, the details of the venues will be revealed for the fans to set the stage rolling for two months of action-packed cricket. According to sources, the announcement has been delayed as the dates for the Assembly Elections in West Bengal, Assam and Tamil Nadu have not been finalised. Kolkata, Chennai and Guwahati will host the home matches of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, respectively.
Earlier, one of the officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India had said that the scheduled was delayed due to elections and counting dates of the votes.
Security forces are likely to get busy in the elections, which could impact the IPL matches. In order to avoid any issues, the Indian Cricket Board is awaiting to hear from authorities and may release the schedule in two phases.
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad are hosting the T20 World Cup 2026 matches, and the venues will need time for preparations before the IPL starts.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions, having won the title last season after a six-run win over Punjab Kings in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. RCB will play the opening fixture in the new season, but it is not confirmed whether they will play their home matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
