Magnitude 5.0 earthquake shakes Kolkata and parts of Bengal on February 27
Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal felt tremors on Friday afternoon after an estimated magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the region at around 1:22 PM on February 27, 2026. According to alerts from the Android Earthquake Alerts System, the epicentre was located approximately 92.9 km away from Kolkata, with tremors also reported in adjoining areas.
Residents in parts of South Bengal reported mild to moderate shaking, with people stepping out of homes and offices as a precaution. As of now, there have been no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.
The latest tremor comes amid a series of recent seismic events affecting the Bengal region, including West Bengal and neighbouring Bangladesh.
On February 26, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck West Sikkim near Naya Bāzār / Gyalshing, around 60 km north of Siliguri in Darjeeling district. The quake, which occurred at approximately 11:34 AM IST, was felt widely across North Bengal, including Siliguri, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri, as well as parts of Bangladesh such as Dhaka. It was described as strong but shallow, with no major damage reported.
Between February 26 and 27, a series of smaller aftershocks and related quakes were recorded in the Sikkim–Darjeeling belt, including a magnitude 4.3 tremor near Kalimpong, a magnitude 2.5 event near Darjeeling, and a magnitude 2.8 quake near Mangan in Sikkim. Light tremors continued into February 27.
Additionally, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported about 14 km west of Kushtia in Bangladesh on Friday morning. Earlier in the week, tremors from a magnitude 5.1 event in nearby regions were also felt across Bangladesh on the night of February 25–26.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, and residents have been advised to remain calm and follow standard safety precautions during aftershocks.
