Big news for iPhone users, Apple Pay is coming to India, but UPI will not work initially

Apple Pay UPI Support And Card Service: If you use iPhone and are thinking that once Apple Pay comes to India, you will be able to make payments directly through UPI like PhonePe or Google Pay, then wait a bit. The company’s strategy is somewhat different. Apple will enter India, but in a phased manner.

Card first, UPI later: Rollout plan will be like this

According to sources, Apple Pay will not start with UPI.

  • First phase: Start with card payment

In the initial phase of launch, Apple Pay will support only credit and debit card payments. Users will be able to save their cards securely in the app and enjoy the benefits of contactless payments. This means clearly, initially this service will be based on traditional card transactions and not on UPI.

  • Second phase: UPI will be connected after approval

When the card-based service is completely stabilized and necessary government approvals are received, then the company will include UPI in the platform. For this, approval from Reserve Bank of India and NPCI will be necessary. This means that iPhone users may have to wait a little for UPI for now.

Changed timeline regarding launch date

Earlier there was talk in the tech market that Apple Pay could knock in India by the end of 2025. But according to the latest information, its launch may now be postponed till mid-2026. However, no official date has been announced by the company yet. In such a situation, users will have to wait for the official announcement.

There will be tough competition in the Indian market

India’s digital payments market is among the fastest growing markets in the world. In such a situation, the path will not be easy for Apple Pay. There are already big players with a strong presence in India, including:

  • PhonePe
  • Google Pay
  • Amazon Pay
  • BHIM

These platforms have made deep inroads into the UPI ecosystem. In such a situation, Apple will have to adopt a strong strategy to win the trust of Indian users.

What will change for iPhone users?

At present it is clear that Apple is taking its steps in India very thoughtfully. In the coming times, it will be interesting to see whether Apple Pay is able to create its own identity in the Indian digital payments market or not.
