Preparations for the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu have intensified and the Election Commission has become fully active to ensure fair and smooth voting in the state. In this connection, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar held an important meeting in Chennai.
Chennai: Preparations have intensified for Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar recently told a press conference in Chennai that this time the assembly elections can be conducted in a single phase. He also indicated that the use of online nomination facility may increase to make the election process more digital and transparent.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that all political parties have suggested holding elections in one phase this time. The Commission is considering all aspects before taking a final decision on this.
Review meeting of election preparations
The Election Commission held a meeting to review preparations across the state. District Collector, Police Officer and senior administrative officers participated in it. Security arrangements, number of polling stations and availability of election materials were discussed in the meeting. On this occasion, CEC honored the young voters who voted for the first time. The objective of this initiative is to make new voters aware about voting and promote their participation.
Gyanesh Kumar said that candidates can now submit nominations through the online portal of the Election Commission. Through this facility, all voters can see the nominations and the process will be more transparent. However, he also clarified that candidates will still be required to submit the form in person to the Returning Officer within the legally stipulated time.
Appeal to young voters
The Chief Election Commissioner appealed to the youth aged between 18 to 30 years to vote on a large scale. He said that the youth had shown record voting in the Bihar Assembly elections and he is confident that the youth of Tamil Nadu will also register a high voting percentage. He urged the youth to exercise their voting rights and strengthen democracy. Gyanesh Kumar also clarified the legal aspects related to Aadhar Card and Voter ID.
He said, Aadhaar card is only a proof of identity of the person and not of citizenship or residence. Voter ID is given only to those citizens who are eligible to vote under Article 326 of the Constitution. CEC warned candidates and voters not to carry cash more than the prescribed limit. This step has been taken to stop the use of illegal money in elections.
