He has previously been a Lok Sabha MP and Union Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Later he joined Trinamool Congress and is currently a minister in the state government. His identity as a popular singer and popular leader is considered important for the party at both political and public relations levels.
By including the name of senior advocate Manaka Guruswamy, who comes from the legal field, in the list, Trinamool has clearly indicated that it wants to send a vocal voice to the Rajya Sabha on social and constitutional issues. She has appeared in many important cases in the Supreme Court and has been recognized as a keen legal expert on issues related to constitutional rights.
It is also discussed in political circles that her name is part of the strategy to give representation to various sections of the society. By making famous film industry actress Koel Mallik as its candidate, the party has also given representation to the cultural world.
Koel Mallik, who has been active in Bengali cinema for a long time, has a wide popularity. Analysts believe that his name has been put forward with the aim of giving a positive message among urban and young voters. Here, the churning is going on from the opposition party BJP also regarding Rajya Sabha candidates.
