Amidst Iran-Israel war, Sachin Pilot raised serious questions on the foreign policy of the Centre, said- ‘Compromise with national interest for personal image’
During the increasing military tension between Iran and Israel in the Middle East, senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot has targeted the foreign policy of the central government. The former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan alleged that the foreign policy of the current government has become ‘individual-based’, whereas it should give priority to the interests of the nation. He stressed that national interests cannot be compromised to build personal image.
Sachin Pilot especially raised questions on the timing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel. He said that this visit and the speech given there raise doubts on India’s traditional impartiality.
‘Compromising with foreign policy’
The Congress leader alleged deviation from India’s long-standing foreign policy principles. He said that India has always supported the two-nation principle, but in recent times there is a change in this stance.
“I think the timing of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Israel was not right. The speech he gave casts doubt on India’s impartiality. We have always supported the two-nation principle and this time we are compromising our foreign policy to some extent.” — Sachin Pilot
Pilot clarified that the objective of foreign policy is to protect the interests of the country and not to burnish the image of any particular person.
‘Policy became based on personal relationships’
Taking his point further, he said that in the last few years, India’s foreign policy has unfortunately become individual-centric.
Sachin Pilot said, “Foreign policy is made keeping in mind the interests of the nation, it is not a medium to create a personal image. Unfortunately, the foreign policy made in the last 10-11 years has become individual based. If the foreign policy is made based on personal relationships, it will harm the interests of the country.” He expressed strong opposition to any such agreement.
This statement comes at a time when according to reports, Israel has allegedly attacked several Iranian targets, raising fears of a major military confrontation in the Middle East.
